STOCKHOLM: The Swedish operators of one of the world’s largest nuclear reactors say they are preparing to restart the facility after it had to be shut down because of a wave of jellyfish.
Officials at OKG, which runs the Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in southeastern Sweden, say they had to shut down reactor three on Sunday after tons of jellyfish clogged up pipes bringing cooling water to the plant.
OKG spokesman Anders Osterberg said Tuesday that the water was needed to cool the reactor’s turbines but there was no risk of an accident.
Osterberg says the plant faced a similar scenario in 2005 when jellyfish clogged the water intake pipe of reactor one.

Admir Suljic, suspected of match-fixing in global football, has been taken into custody by Italian police.
The Slovenian was detained by Italian authorities after landing at Milan's Malpensa airport on a flight from Singapore on Thursday.

Suljic is wanted by judicial authorities in the Italian city of Cremona investigating a massive match-fixing case that has already brought the arrests of more than 50 people, with more than 150 under investigation.

Italian police said Suljic had been on the run since December 2011 and was considered a "key element" in the Last Bet operation.

Police said he spent significant time in Singapore in close contact with the alleged fixing organisation's chiefs.
Earlier on Thursday, speaking at a match-fixing conference in neighbouring Malaysia, Ronald Noble, secretary-general of Interpol, said that Singaporean police had notified authorities in Italy that a suspected match-fixer was flying to Milan.
Singapore has come under growing pressure to act after Europol linked hundreds of suspicious games worldwide to a criminal syndicate in the city-state.
Crime syndicate
Noble said the man was wanted in Italy because he is allegedly working for Tan Seet Eng, a Singaporean businessman, known as Dan Tan, for whom Italian authorities have issued an arrest warrant.

Italian police said Suljic wanted to turn himself in to Italian authorities and that he faces charges of criminal association and sports fraud.

In November, Serbian footballer Almir Gegic, who had also been wanted by Italian authorities, turned himself in at Malpensa.

Tan is accused of heading a crime syndicate that made millions of dollars betting on rigged Italian football matches.
Italian officials have been unable to take Tan into custody as the arrest warrant cannot be served while he is in Asia.

Acknowledging that Singapore has come under criticism for not detaining Tan, Noble said authorities there were restrained because they had to follow their own laws and could only take action when there was enough evidence.

However, Noble added that investigators worldwide have been slow to catch up with match-fixers because they were so far "not properly prepared to work together" and share enough information with their international counterparts.
Ralf Mutschke, FIFA head of security, said at the Malaysian conference that he hoped Tan would be brought to face the courts with the help of Singaporean authorities.
Singapore's role
For their part, Singaporean police said on Thursday that Tan was "assisting" investigations.
Tan, who has been named in several investigations and is wanted in Italy, but denies wrongdoing, is "currently assisting Singapore authorities in their investigations", a police statement said.
It is the first time police have indicated Tan has undergone questioning.
Police also confirmed they gave the tip-off that led to the arrest of Sulic.
"The Singapore authorities have been offering assistance and sharing available information with affected countries and will continue to do so," the statement said.
The Singapore Police Force also announced on Thursday that four senior officers from the SPF and Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) will be heading to the Interpol Headquarters in Lyon, France, to join the Global Anti-Match-fixing Taskforce.

Tan's former associate, Wilson Raj Perumal, has alleged to Italian investigators that Tan placed syndicate wagers on fixed games using Asia-based online betting sites via intermediaries in China.

A report by the EU's police agency earlier this month said organised crime gangs, including ones in Asia, have fixed or tried to fix hundreds of football matches around the world.

Europol said its 18-month review found 380 suspicious matches in Europe and another 300 questionable games outside the continent, mainly in Africa, Asia and South and Central America.

Venezuela's cancer-stricken president, Hugo Chavez, is still suffering respiratory problems after his operation in Cuba more than two months ago, according to officials.

Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said Chavez was continuing to receive treatment at a military hospital in Caracas.
"The breathing insufficiency that emerged post-operation persists, and the tendency has not been favourable, so it is still being treated"
- Ernesto Villegas, Information Minister
"The breathing insufficiency that emerged post-operation persists, and the tendency has not been favourable, so it is still being treated," read the first official communique on Chavez's health since his return to Venezuela on Monday.
Friday's statement, read on national TV by Villegas, said treatment for Chavez's "base illness" - presumably the cancer first detected in mid-2011 - continued without "significant adverse effects for now".
Little detailed medical information has been made public on Chavez's condition, meaning that the government's occasional short statements are examined by Venezuelans for clues about the future for him and the nation he has governed for 14 years.
Since his surgery on December 11 in Havana - his fourth surgery for cancer - the only photos released of him came out almost a week ago. Chavez was seen bed-ridden but smiling, looking through a newspaper with two of his daughters at his side.
At the Caracas military hospital where Chavez is said to be continuing his convalescence, soldiers are on guard outside to keep out journalists and curious onlookers.
Local press reports quote hospital staff as saying they know nothing and have not seen the president.

Amid renewed confidence in the company's ability to reap higher profits, Google's stock breaks $800 for the first time.

Google's stock price has topped $800 (£516) for the first time amid renewed confidence in the company's ability to reap higher profits.
The milestone comes more than five years after Google's shares initially hit $700, but then tumbled as the 2007 financial meltdown sparked global recession.
Its resurgent stock is an implicit endorsement of co-founder Larry Page, who replaced his managerial mentor Eric Schmidt as chief executive in April 2011.
Google's stock has risen by 36% since Mr Page took over.
Most of the company's gains have occurred in the past seven months - a period that has overlapped with a sharp downturn in the stock price of rival Apple.
The iPhone maker's market value has plunged by around $230bn, or 35%, since late September.
But it remains the most valuable US company with a market value of $432bn. Google now ranks third with a value of $266bn.
Tuesday trading saw Google stock climb 1.8% to close at $806.85.
Standard & Poor's Capital IQ analyst Scott Kessler said: "There are probably even going to be people talking whether Google's stock can get to $1,000.
"Never underestimate the excitement that can be caused by a rising stock market and a rising security."

Death toll reaches 39 in three days of violent protests after judge announces death penalty for 21 soccer fans on trial for 2012 stadium disaster, in which 74 people died; Egypt's national defense council calls for dialogue.

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO - At least 30 people were killed on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, violence that compounds a political crisis facing Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
Armoured vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said, where gunshots rang out and protesters burned tires in anger that people from their city had been blamed for stadium deaths last year.
The rioting in Port Said, one of the most deadly spasms of violence since Hosni Mubarak's ouster two years ago, followed a day of anti-Morsi demonstrations on Friday, when nine people were killed. The toll over the past two days stands at 39.
The flare-ups make it even tougher for Morsi, who drew fire last year for expanding his powers and pushing through an Islamist-tinged constitution, to fix the creaking economy and to cool tempers enough to ensure a smooth parliamentary election.
That vote is expected in the next few months and is meant to cement a democratic transition that has been blighted from the outset by political rows and street clashes.
The National Defence Council, led by Morsi and which includes the defence minister who commands the army, called for "a broad national dialogue that would be attended by independent national characters" to discuss political differences and ensure a "fair and transparent" parliamentary poll.
The statement was made on state television by Information Minister Salah Abdel Maqsoud, who is also on the council.
The National Salvation Front of liberal-minded groups and other opponents cautiously welcomed the call but demanded any such dialogue have a clear agenda and guarantees that any deal would be implemented, spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters.
The Front spurned previous calls for dialogue, saying Mursi ignored voices beyond his Islamist allies. The Front earlier on Saturday threatened an election boycott and to call for more protests on Friday if demands were not met.
Its demands included picking a national unity government to restore order and holding an early presidential poll.
A judge announced the death penalty for 21 of the 73 defendants on trial for the Port Said massacre. Clashes in Port Said following the announcement of the verdict left at least nine dead and dozens more injured, according to the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram.
Seventy-four people died in riots at a soccer stadium in Port Said on February 1, 2012. Eyewitnesses said police did nothing to stop the melee that broke out between two rival soccer teams and even refused to open the doors to allow people to escape. The massacre was held up as proof of the country’s slide towards anarchy.
Over the past week, the “ultras,” or young soccer hooligans who are often at the head of protest marches and responsible for much of the violence at Egypt’s protests, posted online threats promising to destroy and burn buildings across Cairo if they are unsatisfied with the verdict.
If it is anything less than capital punishment, “the country will burn,” one 19-year-old ‘ultra’ named Ahmed told The Jerusalem Post on Friday in Tahrir Square. “We are angry because we haven’t received our rights… it’s not just a football match, the [Muslim] Brotherhood wants to continue to burn the country to they can continue to rule,” he said. “There’s no justice.”
In the aftermath of clashes on Friday night to mark the two-year anniversary, pundits and politicians focused much attention on a new group of protesters who also could be linked to the ultras: the black bloc. For the first time on Friday, teenagers and young people came out in force dressed head-to-toe in black, many wearing black balaclava ski masks.
The term black bloc began in Germany in the 1970s with a group of anarchists and has been used loosely in a number of other instances since then, including the anti-World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999 and the G20 summit in Toronto in 2010.
In Egypt, members of the black bloc refused to speak to the media. “No one knows anything about them, they appeared three or four days ago,” said Adel, an Arabic literature teacher who saw them in Tahrir on Friday for the first time. “Some people think they are ‘ultras’ but they issued a statement on Friday saying ‘we’re not ultras, we’re not anyone.’” However, some wore ski masks with the insignia of the Ahly soccer team.
Many seasoned activists dismissed the black blocs as angry teenagers looking to stir up trouble who will not have a lasting impact. “We might see a reemergence [in coming protests] but I don’t expect them to hijack the revolution,” said Adel.
“[Are the black bloc] anarchist revolutionaries or 18 year olds who live with their moms & wear black masks thinking life is a video game?” asked one activist sarcastically on Twitter.

CAIRO -- Relatives and angry young men rampaged through the Egyptian city of Port Said on Saturday in assaults that killed at least 27 people following death sentences for local fans involved in the country's worst bout of soccer violence.
Unrest surrounding the second anniversary of Egypt's revolution also broke out in Cairo and other cities for a third day, with protesters clashing for hours with riot police who fired tear gas that encompassed swaths of the capital's downtown.
The divisive verdict and bloodshed highlight challenges being faced by President Mohammed Morsi, who took office seven months ago following an Egyptian revolution that ousted autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak. Critics say Morsi has failed to carry out promised reforms in the country's judiciary and police force, and claim little has improved in the two years after the uprising against Mubarak.
The Islamist leader, Egypt's first freely elected and civilian president, met for the first time with top generals as part of the newly formed National Defense Council to discuss the deployment of troops in two cities. The military was deployed to Port Said hours after the verdict was announced, and warned that a curfew could be declared in areas of unrest. The military was also deployed to the canal city of Suez, where protesters attacked the main security compound there after eight people were killed late Friday.
Saturday's riot in Port Said stemmed from animosity between police and die-hard soccer fans know as Ultras, who also were part of the mass uprising against Mubarak that began on Jan. 25, 2011, and at forefront of protests against the military rulers who assumed temporary power after his ouster.
It also reflected tensions after the uprising that reached into all sectors of Egyptian life, even sports.
Survivors and witnesses said Mubarak loyalists had a hand in instigating last year's attack, which began Feb. 1 after Port Said's home team Al-Masry won a match, 3-1, against Cairo's Al-Ahly. Some say "hired thugs" wearing green T-shirts posing as Al-Masry fans led the attacks.
Others say, at the very least, police were responsible for gross negligence in the Feb. 1 soccer brawl that killed 74 Al-Ahly fans.
Anger at police was evident in Port Said, home to most of the 73 men accused of involvement in the bloodshed, although the trial was held outside Cairo.
Judge Sobhi Abdel-Maguid did not give his reasoning when he handed down the sentences for 21 defendants. Executions in Egypt are usually carried out by hanging.
Verdicts for the remaining 52 defendants, including nine security officials, are scheduled to be delivered March 9. Some have been charged with murder and others with assisting the attackers. All the defendants – who were not present in the courtroom Saturday for security reasons – can appeal the verdict.
Supporters of those sentenced to death said they were being used as scapegoats. The rioters attacked the city's prison after the verdict was read live on state television to try and free the defendants. A police lieutenant and police officer were killed in the assault.
Residents also focused their anger against the government, attacking a power station, the governor's office and local courthouse. They staged a sit-in along the main road leading into the city and occupied a police station.
Security officials said a total of 27 people were killed and some 400 wounded, many by gunfire, throughout the city. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.
Victims were killed when police fired tear gas, bird shot and other live ammunition at the mob. Two soccer players who died_ one from Port Said's Al-Marikh club and the other a former player of its Al-Masry club – apparently were killed on their way to do training near the prison. One of the players was shot three times, a local health official said.
Some 220 kilometers (135 miles) away in Cairo, the divisive nature of the trial was on display.
Relatives of those killed at the soccer game erupted in joy in the courtroom after the verdict was announced.
Families yelled "Allahu Akbar!" Arabic for "God is great" and pumped their fists in the air. Others held up pictures of the deceased, most of whom were young men from Cairo's poor neighborhoods. One man fainted while others hugged. The judge smacked the bench several times to try to restore calm.
Supporters of Cairo's Al-Ahly celebrated the verdict in the team's club before heading toward Interior Ministry headquarters, which manages the police, for more protests.
Lawmakers had formed a fact-finding committee that found some evidence toward collusion from authorities, but the evidence was not conclusive.
Nine of those on trial are security officials, charged with assisting the attackers for failing to search for weapons as is customary and allowing known criminals to attend the game. One was a senior officer who locked the exit designated for Al-Ahly fans. Many victims suffocated or were trampled to death in the corridor trying to escape the violence. Others were thrown off bleachers, undressed, beaten with iron bars and had the words "Port Said" carved into their skin.
Police reform researcher Karim Ennarah said the lack of a proper investigation raises the specter that some of those on trial are innocent. The state prosecutor's office, tasked with investigating the case, was long run by a Mubarak holdover.
"We still operate in a state that doesn't hold its employees, specifically in the security sector, to account," Ennarah said. "There might have been democratic elections, but it still is a very undemocratic state in terms of how police work."
The most high profile case since Egypt's uprising was that of Mubarak himself. He was found guilty of failing to stop the killing of around 900 protesters. The verdict angered people who wanted him executed on charges of ordering deadly force. He was sentenced to life in prison in what even some of his opponents argue was a verdict based on flimsy evidence aimed at appeasing an angry public.
A lawyer of one of the defendants given a death sentence Saturday said this verdict too was political.
Days before the verdict, Morsi declared the victims "martyrs of the revolution", granting families up to $15,000 in compensation.
"There is nothing to say these people did anything and we don't understand what this verdict is based on," Mohammed al-Daw told The Associated Press by telephone.
"Our situation in Port Said is very grave because kids were taken from their homes for wearing green T-shirts," he said, referring to the Al-Masry team color.
The president, once a detainee under Mubarak for his political activities with the Brotherhood, had vowed to restore security in his first 100 days in office. Instead, critics say he has waged a personal campaign against anti-Brotherhood figures rather than carry out comprehensive reform.
His Muslim Brotherhood allies blamed "misleading" media outlets for enflaming the public against the government. The main opposition bloc said it holds Morsi responsible for "the excessive use of force by the security forces against protesters."
Fans of Al-Ahly, mostly young men in their teens, promised more violence in the days leading up to the verdict if the death penalty was not handed down. Their main Facebook page had called for bloodshed.
"This was necessary," said Nour al-Sabah, whose 17-year-old son Ahmed Zakaria died in last year's melee. "Now I want to see the guys when they are executed with my own eyes, just as they saw the murder of my son."
"We are not really that happy," Mohamed Ahmed, a survivor of the attack, said. "The government helped the Ultras of Port Said by blocking the gates of the stadium until people suffocated to death."
Meanwhile, Port Said resident and activist Rasha Hammouda said the city wants those involved in killings to be brought to justice.
"We have no problem with execution of those who killed, but bring everyone who is involved," she said.
